When you're eight points out of a playoff spot with just under a month to go in the season, a game against the eighth-place team is of paramount importance. Unfortunately for the Hurricanes, the Boston Bruins took a lead under a minute into the game and didn't look back, scoring a 5-2 win that puts the Canes way behind the eight ball. At ten points out with 12 to go, the Canes' playoff chances are on life support.

The conventional wisdom in cross-conference games is that simply getting the game to overtime and earning a point is a good night. By that metric, the Hurricanes didn't have a good night on Saturday, as Ilya Bryzgalov earned his league-leading eighth shutout with a 4-0 whitewashing of the Canes that put a severe cramp in the Canes' floundering postseason chances.

Few expected the Canes' playoff hopes to still cling to life after a brutal back-to-back with the Caps and Penguins. Make it seven in a row for the red-hot Hurricanes. The Ottawa Senators came to town Thursday night and left with their collective tail between their legs, as the Canes chased Pascal Leclaire only six minutes into the game en route to a surprisingly easy 4-1 victory.
